It's spring and we have a sunny, snowy day here in Klamath Falls, OR. Can you picture that? If somebody had told me that some years ago, I would have never pictured it. But, as many say here: This is Klamath Falls!
Well, let’s go straight to the point!
I decided to further my education and go for my master’s in education, most specifically TESOL (Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages). It was hard to find the course of study I really wanted in a reliable university. I did some research and sent some e-mails asking for information and Post University promptly contacted me. At that time, I was not ready , but they promised to follow up with me in three months and they sure did. Since then, I’ve fallen in love with the administrative staff, my advisor, and my professors. My first module was EDU 505, Future of Education and this is my second module, EDU 520, Digitally Mediated Teaching & Learning. I really liked my first module, but I’m absolutely happy with my second one. Maybe it’s because I’m very visual and kinesthetic, having the opportunity to try new things and see the results right away motivates me. That might be one of the reasons why the learning theories and linguistics are more towards the end of this course so we don’t give it up right at the beginning.
EDU 520 is basically about digital technology for teaching and learning, and professional learning environment (PLE). This blog is part of my project for my whole course. First, we learned about online identity and the importance of establishing a professional online profile. We were asked to analyze two professionals and how they projected their images in the digital environment. I decided to expand a little bit and analyze three professionals. Two good examples and a not so good one, so I could learn what not to do as well. It was a great exercise that led us to reflect on our goals and how to start and market our professional brand.
In our second week, our task was to develop our professional website. As I mentioned in my post last week, I became addicted to developing my site on my second day. It was very challenging at first but rewarding at the end of the second day.
This is my third week and writing my first official post on my blog is the task for this week.
As a typical procrastinator, I just finished my assignment for week 2 and decided to start my task for this week. I panicked when I opened the first article “How to Write an Awesome Blog Post in Five Steps” and read that from the seed of the idea to finally hitting “Publish,” we might spend several days or maybe even a week “writing” a blog post. OH MY GOD!!! The author was so right. I spent 15 minutes just trying to find the name of the author for that article and never did!
Well, jokes apart, I really liked the above mentioned article, and I’m using it as a reference to write my first post. As I’m very visual, I started by making a collage that has to do with me and how I am feeling right now. Then, my second task was to decide on a catchy headline. The author, whoever it might be, also said that a bit of humor helps. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m trying to be funny here. It doesn’t usually work for me because being funny in a second language is a difficult task. I’m Brazilian, by the way.
I was happy to learn that my style of writing is similar to the author’s. That might help me a little, right? Just mirror him or her! I like to sit down and write an entire draft in a single sitting.
In the article by Burke (2017) How to overcome your fears and write the perfect first blog post, she gives a variety of tips for first time bloggers such as “don’t scribble any ideas out if you think they’re “bad”. Don’t stop when you think you have the perfect one. Don’t linger on an idea for too long”. Right now, that’s exactly what I’m doing! She also highlights the importance of editing our work, editing some more, and a bit more. That stuck in my mind because I’m not good at editing. She finishes saying that editing is what sets us apart from our competition and giving up the first draft is like giving up a piece of scrap paper for a final exam.
The video eLearning Bloggers' Masterclass - Finding your voice for your blog through writing was very helpful, especially when she talks about “belonging somewhere” and “finding your voice”. By watching her video, I got to the conclusion that writing a blog is like writing a diary, it can be fun, informal and I don’t need to worry about the APA style.
Well, that’s it for now! I’ve read my post five times now and I’ll post it in two hours. So I have time to edit at least twice before publishing. I do hope I have succeeded in my task for this week.
I’m going to the TESOL conference in Chicago next week and I’m very excited about it. It's my first one and I’ll share my experiences with you next week.

Although this is my second module at Post University, it feels like a new life was born inside me today. I started developing my website yesterday and ended my day a bit disappointed and exhausted after facing so many challenges. (Hint: I don't function after 2 pm). This morning, everything seemed so clear, and flowed so easily. I'm already addicted to it and can't stop learning new features to improve my site. I'm sure this will change my life to the better!
